Writing to a network path with Print Distributor

To allow Print Distributor to write files you need to change the account the Print Distributor service runs under to one with rights to the network path you are trying to use. This page will take you through the steps to configure this on Windows 2000 / XP.

The first step is to open the control panel and select the Administrative Tools applet:

Admin Tools Screen Shot

Now select the Services icon and look for Print Distributor in the list of services:

Print Distributor Service

Double click on the Print Distributor entry to configure the service and select the "Log On" tab and enter the account details in "This account:".

The account you use should have rights to the network path you are sending your print files to and be a member of the local Administrators group on the machine you have Print Distributor installed on.

Using the Services tool you now need to stop and the start the service to use the new configuration.

You can now use a UNC path to write files, just create an entry in the Write File dialog in the form \\ServerName\ShareName\FileName
